The risks of polypharmacy in hypertension care
Prescriptions of calcium channel blockers for older adults with hypertension, which can lead to peripheral edema, can then lead to prescriptions for a diuretic to treat the edema, which can increase patient risks, according to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine. An accompanying editorial said this type of prescribing cascade could lead to adverse drug events, avoidable testing and hospitalizations.
