ICD-10 Z codes for SDOH incomplete, underused
2022-05-05
Collecting data on social determinants of health through ICD-10 Z codes and analyzing that data could give primary care providers more insight into unmet social needs, but in 2019, only 0.33% of claims involving patients whose income was 100% below the federal poverty level included a Z code indicating a social need, says primary care physician Rita Kuwahara, a health policy fellow at Georgetown University. Moreover, there are no ICD-10 Z codes for some common social needs, such as inadequate access to transportation, and Kuwahara says a comprehensive set of Z codes as well as incentives to use them are needed.
