Scientists race to learn more about highly mutated Omicron variant


Scientists identified more than 50 mutations in the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, and researchers worldwide are racing to learn whether the new variant is more transmissible or resistant to currently available vaccines. They are studying animal hosts and human patients to understand its mutations. Some mutations may blunt the effects of others, says evolutionary biologist Jesse Bloom.
