Animal studies, perseverance led way to mRNA vaccines


Messenger RNA vaccines for COVID-19 may be the first of their kind, but they are based on more than three decades of work by hundreds of researchers who tested mRNA-based therapeutics in lab animals to find safe, effective formulations. The path to commercialization has been marked by skepticism, a lack of funding, patent disputes and manufacturing challenges as well as dogged determination.
