Why SARS-CoV-2 in wild deer is causing concern


Scientists suspect SARS-CoV-2 originated in an animal, but humans are now the primary reservoir and have probably transmitted the virus to pets, zoo animals, farmed mink and farmed and wild deer. Mice, raccoons, skunks and other animals near a mink farm were found to carry various other coronaviruses, raising concerns that deer will transmit SARS-CoV-2 to other wild species, giving rise to recombinant coronaviruses.
