Veterinary oncologist: Pets' cancer is often treatable


Veterinary oncologists are adopting the same technologies that cancer specialists for humans are using, such as genomic tests that enable targeted treatment and a new liquid biopsy that detects cancer DNA circulating in the bloodstream, veterinary oncologist Kai Shiu said. Cancer has become the leading cause of death in older dogs and cats, but many forms of cancer are treatable, and treatment for animals is not necessarily as dramatic as treatment for humans, Dr. Shiu said.
