Deltacoronaviruses in pigs may be capable of spillover


A porcine deltacoronavirus strain was found in plasma samples from three Haitian children with fevers, and subsequent analyses suggest the infections resulted from at least two separate zoonotic transmissions from related strains that acquired the same genetic mutations. Prior to the study, published in Nature, only alpha- and betacoronaviruses were known to infect humans, and the findings suggest people may also be susceptible to deltacoronaviruses carried by pigs.
