Novel surgery corrects cockatoo's chronic condition


Veterinarian Christoph Mans, a clinical associate professor of zoological medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, used a novel surgical technique to correct a chronic cloacal prolapse in a 24-year-old umbrella cockatoo. None of the other procedures the bird had undergone in the past 16 years had succeeded, but asymmetric cloacoplasty performed by Dr. Mans appears to have worked.
