Avian malaria suspected in deaths of penguins at Ind. zoo

Six African penguins at Columbian Park Zoo in Indiana died of suspected avian malaria despite receiving anti-malarial medications and other intensive care, according to Zoo Director Neil Dale, and three others are severely ill. Elsewhere, veterinarians and diagnostic labs were unable to determine the cause of seven African penguin deaths at the Florida Aquarium in July.
