Novel parasite may have killed Fla. zoo's river otters


A previously unidentified species of coccidia parasite damaged the intestines of two river otters at Brevard Zoo, enabling Clostridium bacteria to colonize the otters' intestines, killing them, according to zoo officials. No gastrointestinal infections were found in the zoo's other carnivores, and veterinarians are working with a parasitologist and a molecular lab to learn more about the parasite.
