Fatal, portable pathogen threatens swine industry


African swine fever virus was identified a century ago, and while it spreads easily among pigs, it can also survive in cooked and cured pork products and is easily transported on shoes and clothing. There is no cure or approved vaccine for the deadly virus, and after being found in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, it is closer than ever to the US, where it poses a serious economic threat.
