What does wildfire smoke mean for animals?


AVMA President Dr. José Arce says pets are known to experience health issues after exposure to smoke, and animals should be kept inside when smoke levels are high, but the consequences and protective measures for wildlife are less clear. Researchers have studied orangutans, birds and other wild animals, along with research animals, in an effort to understand how wildlife can be affected by wildfire smoke, but difficulty scaling up studies during a fire and the logistics of managing the research have complicated efforts to fully explore the question.
