Why spaniels, golf balls and bacon may be a turtle's best friend


When high-school English teacher John Rucker mentioned that his two Boykin spaniels instinctively fetched box turtles, he sparked interest from local biologists, wildlife veterinarians and zoologists who needed help on research and conservation projects. Rucker started training other Boykins to track turtles, using golf balls and bacon grease, and he takes his seven trained dogs across the country to help scientists track turtle populations and identify threats.
