Veterinarian: Don't leave pets out of disaster plans


The Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act requires states that seek for federal assistance in emergency scenarios to make accommodations for service animals and pets during evacuations, but the law is no guarantee of local accommodations, veterinarian Michael Watts writes. Dr. Watts advises animal owners to follow AVMA recommendations for pet preparedness, including stocking up on supplies, keeping veterinary care records handy and properly identifying pets with a microchip.
