Experts correct myths, misconceptions about suicide


Suicide is preventable, 90% of people who survive a suicide attempt go on living, and while the suicide rate is higher in the veterinary profession than in the general population, it is not epidemic or even as high as in some other professions, speakers said during the AVMA's recent Suicide Prevention Roundtable. "Suicide is not an inevitable outcome of someone experiencing pain or crisis in their life, nor is one's choice of occupation the root cause of suicide," said Dr. Jen Brandt, the AVMA's director of well-being, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
