14 black skimmers found with septic arthritis


Fourteen black skimmer nestlings found at Fort Myers Beach, Fla., with swollen limbs and covered in sand spurs had septic arthritis and were euthanized. More than 100 of the birds found in a similar condition last year were found to be infected with four different pathogens, and scientists are testing the birds found this year as well as area water quality.
