Thawing permafrost raises concerns for infrastructure


A large percentage of buildings and roads are at risk in the warming Arctic as a result of the thawing of near-surface permafrost by 2050, scientists conclude in a recently released paper. Dmitry Streletskiy, a geography professor at George Washington University and paper co-author, says Russia is at particular risk given the high number of its towns and cities that are located in permafrost areas.
