Gastroenterologists said some of the biggest challenges to the field include a shortage of GI physicians, lack of an innovation pipeline, reimbursement and other payment issues, misinformation, and the impact of COVID-19. "The biggest challenge facing gastroenterology as a subspecialty is [the] shortage of physicians and the impact of COVID-19 on screening for colon cancer," said Pankaj Vashi, MD, department head of gastroenterology/nutrition and vice chief of staff at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Chicago.
