Metabolic syndrome may raise risk of internal hemorrhoids

Metabolic syndrome was associated with a greater risk of internal hemorrhoids and diverticulitis in patients ages 75 and older, according to a study presented at the ACG's 2020 Annual Virtual Scientific Meeting by Farah Harmouch, MD, of St. Luke's University Health Network. Researchers found older patients were a little more likely to have hemorrhoids and younger patients were more prone to metabolic syndrome, colonic diverticulosis and constipation.
