CMS chief defends vaccine mandate amid staffing fears


Some US hospitals and nursing homes are worried that the federal vaccine mandate for health care workers could cause staffing shortages, but CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure said unvaccinated workers who have to quarantine or take time off while sick also cause staffing issues in addition to posing health risks to patients and colleagues. Brooks-LaSure said the staff shortages may not be as severe as feared by some, citing a scenario in Maine where a limited number of people quit after the implementation of a vaccine mandate for health care workers.
