Disparities among CMS-specified imaging costs examined


Experts evaluated 13 shoppable diagnostic radiology services specified by the CMS under federal law with publicized prices across 5,700 US hospitals. Results showed low compliance rates and "startling" variations between Medicare and commercial diagnostic radiology exam rates. In some instances, private payer rates were 10 times higher than the Medicare rate for exams with exactly the same current procedural terminology code, according to data published in a radiology journal
