Good leaders rally people around "a sense of common purpose" and identity without automatically lapsing into the groupthink and out-group disdain that is often negatively called "tribalism," write psychology professors Jay Van Bavel and Dominic Packer. "Group identity does not always lead to prejudice and discrimination, dislike and disregard -- indeed, the assumption that these outcomes are inevitable is one of the most prominent myths about identity," they write.
