Blackfoot language, tribal land star in movie


A film shot entirely in the Blackfoot language and on land belonging to the Blackfeet Nation in Montana tells the story of the devastation that small pox brought to the community. The film, "Sooyii," which recently premiered at the Montana Film Festival, can help promote the use of Indigenous languages in films and the need for more people to learn endangered tribal languages, says Jesse DesRosier, a teacher of the Blackfoot language who appears in the movie and translated the script into Blackfoot.
