Tenn. researchers pursue novel OA therapy


There are no safe, effective treatments for post-traumatic osteoarthritis, but researchers at Vanderbilt University hope to change that with a therapeutic approach that blocks production of the protein that degrades cartilage in affected patients. They have been testing nanoparticles loaded with small interfering RNA that targets RNA encoded by the MMP13 gene, and early testing of a local injection suggests it could ease the drivers of joint pain in patients with the condition.
