Contractors and owners should negotiate contracts with an understanding of "float," which is the amount of time allowed for a noncritical activity before delays on a project begin to occur, an attorney writes. "Absent a float-sharing or float-allocating clause in a construction contract, the modern trend is that the 'project owns the float,' " the attorney writes.
