First image of Wigner crystal captured


A honeycomb of electrons inside other electrons, known as electron ice or a Wigner crystal, has been captured by physicists in an image for the first time. Researchers used a pair of tungsten semiconductors to trap electrons and freeze them just short of absolute zero in order the capture the image, which is described in Nature.
