Wari elite used hallucinogens to influence people


The leaders of the ancient Wari Empire of Peru used chicha, a drink similar to beer, and the hallucinogenic drug vilca to exert control over people in pre-Columbian times, a study in Antiquity suggests. Researchers say the community's elite used the drink mixture to increase their political and social status.
