In Canada, where about 30% of students are immigrants or have at least one foreign-born parent, immigrant and refugee students are outperforming some of their peers worldwide, data show. School leaders work to develop students' English-language skills, including through a fast-track programme called Literacy Enrichment Academic Programme adopted by a school in Toronto.
A study commissioned by the Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia found 27.6% of girls in single-gender schools enrolled in chemistry, compared with 15.4% in coed schools, with 36% of girls in single-gender schools enrolling in maths methods, compared with 21.6% in coed schools. Boys also enrolled in more science, technology, engineering and maths courses in single-gender schools than at coed schools, which may be related to the socioeconomic factors of students' parents, researcher Helen Forgasz said.
Coaching programmes for teachers work best when they're done on a small scale, and quality of feedback is more important than the number of coaching sessions, according to a study. Researchers found the most effective models include peer mentoring and summer workshops with follow-up coaching sessions.

Anuban Satun School Director Sutthi Saisunee has created a 10-step community-based research project for students at the primary school in Thailand. Under the project, teachers are learning coaches versus lecturers, and students develop problem-solving and life skills, Saisunee said.
Some rural schools in China are using technology to keep students connected to learning. In one school with three pupils, students participate in livestreamed classes, where they can interact with remote teachers.
Students in all primary schools in Singapore will be taught under the Applied Learning Programme by 2023. The programme supports the idea that students learn best by doing, Education Minister Ng Chee Meng said.
