United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has voiced concerns about the increase in violence used by Indonesian security forces against human rights activists, students and members of the press in the provinces of Papua and West Papua. Bachelet is urging Indonesian authorities to respect Papuans' right to freedom of expression and refrain from using excessive force.
President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil this week accused United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet of meddling in his country's internal affairs and attacking Brazil's military and law enforcement officers. Bachelet had voiced concern over a marked increase in human rights restrictions and killings by police officers.
United Nations aid workers supplied more than 2 million North Koreans with food and health care in 2018, and the mission must be maintained at current levels to continue to provide critical aid in the country, says UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. North Korea has told the UN to cut the number of aid workers it sends, saying the assistance has been politicized.
A lack of funding will force more than half of the United Nations Population Fund's reproductive health facilities in Yemen to close this month, leaving approximately 650,000 women and girls without access to vital care, the agency warns. Residents of Russian-occupied Crimea are subject to abductions, enforced disappearances, torture and other human rights violations, according to a United Nations report on the region. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present the human rights report to the UN General Assembly when the group convenes later this month.
