Obama Foundation receives $5M from Nike Foundation

The Obama Foundation has received $5 million from the Nike Foundation for the construction of an athletic facility at its Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The Obama Foundation plans to spend $500 million on the presidential center and, as part of its contract with Chicago, must prove it can raise the funds needed for construction and operation privately.

Mergers present an opportunity for nonprofits to achieve organic and mission-related growth, but they require buy-in from nonprofit boards and executives, agreement on long-term goals and cultural alignment, says David La Piana of La Piana Consulting. Trust and self-interest are two critical barriers, which can be addressed by being transparent and assuring executives they'll be treated fairly, he says.

Mary's Place raised $3 million over 54 days for its "No Child Sleeps Outside" campaign, and it'll use the funds to help finance a new shelter at Amazon's Seattle headquarters that will double its capacity, says Executive Director Marty Hartman. Seventy-five businesses and 5,000 individuals contributed to the campaign.

The IRS may be unaware of 9,774 organizations that are involved in politics and operate as tax-exempt organizations but haven't properly notified the IRS or secured 501(c)4 status, says the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. The organizations, which could be subject to over $95.9 million in penalties, might not understand the requirements or think they comply because they notified the IRS in another way, it says.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been named the 2019 Walter Payton Man of the Year Charity Challenge winner and will receive $25,000 to direct to a charity of his choosing. Newton has distributed grants totaling $5.13 million to organizations through his foundation.
