The ACR sent a letter to CMS Administrator Seema Verma saying the College generally supports temporary measures easing physician supervision requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic in efforts to curb administrative burdens and disease transmission, but the ACR urged the CMS to require direct outpatient therapeutic service supervision in the hospital setting once the pandemic eases. "The ACR believes that CMS should not compromise quality patient care and safety by allowing outpatient therapeutic services to be performed without direct physician supervision," wrote ACR CEO Dr. William Thorwarth.
Thirty-one percent of internal medicine residents who underwent radiology resident-led medical rounds were able to identify situations where the rounds prompted changes to patient management, and 94% reported that the rounds boosted their medical knowledge, according to a study in Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology. Researchers also found that radiology-led round attendance led to 61% having greater knowledge about evidence-based imaging order choices, and 64% had better understanding about image ordering resources.
Researchers found that a new multiplexed sensitivity-encoding diffusion-weighted imaging MRI protocol allowed for significantly better image quality and signal-to-noise ratio, as well as better artifact correction and fat diffusion, but similar apparent diffusion coefficient values, in breast imaging, compared with single-shot DWI. The findings, described in Radiology: Imaging Cancer, indicate MUSE DWI's promise in clinical applications, but more studies are needed, researchers wrote.
A study in Clinical Radiology found that less experienced radiologists who used contrast-enhanced MRI in addition to noncontrast MRI properly identified ectopic pregnancy implantation sites in 92% of cases, compared with 86% of cases with noncontrast MRI alone, but experienced radiologists determined implantation sites in 92% of cases with both approaches. Researchers also found that CE-MRI enabled more frequent visualization of fallopian tubes and significantly improved the confidence of less-experienced radiologists in identifying fallopian tube dilation.
Ultrashort echo time MRI yielded similarly "excellent" patient and lesion-based interobserver agreement in identifying COVID-19 symptoms, and similarly "substantial or excellent" agreement in evaluating ground-glass opacities, affected lobes, consolidations and other COVID-19-related findings in patients with confirmed COVID-19 and various pulmonary diseases, compared with CT, according to a study in the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. "Due to the high concordance with CT for visualizing the representative pulmonary findings and an image quality similar to CT, MRI is considered valuable for evaluating the radiological findings of patients with various pulmonary parenchyma diseases," researchers wrote.

The CMS is introducing flexibility and adjusting current and future value-based care models from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, writes CMS Administrator Seema Verma. Changes include adjustments to payment methodologies, implementation dates for some new models and deadlines for some existing models.
Jim Parker, HHS' senior adviser for health reform, said during a webinar last week that "the cat is out of the bag" regarding telehealth technology due to its explosion in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. "We look forward to helping policymakers, congressional leaders and regulators move the interest in telehealth and health care consumerism, particularly for rural areas, forward in a more permanent way," said Parker, adding, "we do face the challenge of where we go from here."
Deep learning algorithms can be used to improve preprocessing, signal decomposition and reconstruction of functional and diffusion MRI scans, researcher Dr. Peter Chang said at the American Society of Neuroradiology's virtual meeting. Chang also said deep learning can enable MRI data prediction and classification.
A new lattice light-sheet microscopy multidimensional analysis pipeline developed by researchers from the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago allowed complex analyses and machine learning of T-cell videos and enabled identification of molecule variations, according to a study in the journal Cell Systems. Researcher Jillian Rosenberg said the LaMDA pipeline may be used for biological response prediction and may aid in drug and vaccine development, but more studies are needed.
