The Manitoba First Nation in Canada recently held an indigenous language puppet show for elementary- and middle-school students to teach the Dakota language and help reinforce what students already may know. Students engaged in basic vocabulary and phrases during the show by Dakota language teacher Redwing Thomas, who drove 10 hours from Nebraska for the event.

Children ages 6 months to 2 years whose parents reported increased use of handheld screen devices -- such as smartphones, tablets and electronic games -- were more likely to have expressive speech delays, with each 30-minute increase in handheld screen time tied to 49% higher odds of developing speech delays, according to a Canadian study to be presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting. The findings showed that handheld-device use wasn't associated with other communication delays such as social interaction, gestures and body language.
