Many breast cancer patients undergo unnecessary double mastectomy
More breast cancer patients opt for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, a preventive procedure that removes both the cancerous and normal breast, but as many as seven out of 10 patients do not need to undergo the procedure, a study showed. Data on 1,447 women with breast cancer without recurrence showed about 69% who underwent double mastectomy did not have major genetic or familial risk factors for developing cancer in the unaffected breast. The findings were published in the journal JAMA Surgery. HealthDay News
