Educators from China and abroad recently discussed English-language education at a conference in Beijing. Among other things, educators discussed the importance of reading in English in language learning.
Raising cattle for milk is a way of life in many communities around the world, and a study of 500 families in Kenya found that those whose herds were vaccinated -- and thus healthier and better milk producers -- tended to spend the additional income on their daughters' education. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, shows that for every 10% increase in vaccinated cattle, families were 0.8% more likely to send their daughters to high school.
Experts suggest teachers take time during winter break to unwind by taking a variety of steps, such as trying to switch off from work. They also suggest creating a "buffer zone" to help transition from school to home life.
A company called VIPKid matches students ages 5 to 12 in China with online instructors who teach them subjects, including maths, English and science. The firm launched with 200 teachers, presently has 5,000, and is expected to grow next year to 25,000 teachers reaching 200,000 students.
First-grade students in one Illinois classroom are reading the same books as students in Thailand as part of the Global Read Aloud program. Teacher Emily Phamornsuwana, who once taught in Thailand, arranged the six-week project between the students and used apps such as Seesaw, VoiceThread and Skype to communicate.
Teachers in some parts of China used technology, including free messaging and live-streaming apps, to continue teaching when schools were closed because of heavy smog. Officials said they developed the emergency plan to comply with a "closing schools but not suspending classes" policy.
