USDA selects 8 states for fresh produce pilot program
Oregon will be one of eight states participating in a U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program intended to provide more fresh produce for school meals. Under the pilot program -- also adopted by California, Connecticut, Michigan, New York, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin -- schools will be able to buy produce directly from local farmers, boosting the economy and cutting out the "middle man." Ala. congressman: Meal flexibility will bring more students to lunch
Congressman Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., says he wants schools to serve healthy options, but with flexibility so students will want to eat lunch at school. Health ranking cites higher U.S. obesity, diabetes rates
America's Health Rankings has named Hawaii the healthiest state for three consecutive years, while Mississippi was listed as the least healthy. Data showed that about 10% of adults reported having diabetes, and about 25% said they had not exercised in the previous 30 days. Study: Moms' mobile-device use during meals decreases interaction with children
Mothers who used mobile devices during meals had 20% fewer verbal and 39% fewer nonverbal interactions with their children, according to a study in Academic Pediatrics. Growth of organic farming overburdens USDA inspectors
Some people are questioning the accuracy of organic food inspections as the rapid growth of organic farming has caused the USDA to bring in outside entities to help stamp organic food, many of which have failed to uphold basic Agriculture Department standards, reports show. Thirty-seven of the USDA's 81 certifying agents underwent a full review this year and 23 were written up for not properly enforcing certification requirements on farms in audits, an internal Agriculture Department report said.
