UN chief urges action on Int'l Day for the Eradication of Poverty
Close to one billion people have escaped poverty over the last 25 years, but at least 700 million are still unable to obtain basic necessities, said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in an address marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. "Let us remember that ending poverty is not a matter of charity but a question of justice," he said.

UN panel to present findings on Myanmar atrocities
Members of a United Nations investigation into human rights abuses committed against the Rohingya people in Myanmar will present their findings to the UN Security Council before October ends. The panel has called for a number of Myanmar officials to be tried for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

WHO eyes international emergency status for Ebola outbreak
The World Health Organization plans to hold an emergency meeting today to discuss whether the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo constitutes an international public health emergency. Ongoing conflict in the region has hampered efforts to contain the virus, and some aid organizations have withdrawn staff from the area over safety concerns.

Guterres highlights the plight of rural women and girls
The global community must act to protect and support women and girls living in rural areas, said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as he marked the International Day of Rural Women. Guterres noted such women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty, inequality, exclusion and climate change.

UN: African countries should regulate e-waste, promote recycling
The United Nations Environment Programme advised African governments to pass laws regulating the recycling of electronic waste, including restrictions on foreign imports. "Prudent policies that promote recycling of e-waste could help the region tackle its growing e-waste problem," says the UNEP's Abdouraman Bary.

UN Command meets with N. Korea, S. Korea on demilitarization
Representatives of the United Nations Command met with leaders from North and South Korea this week to discuss the demilitarization of the border region between the two countries.
