Guterres, UNSC urge Turkey to de-escalate in Syria
Members of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday warned that the humanitarian situation in Syria could be further destabilized by Turkey's military incursion, which the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates has already forced 70,000 people from their homes. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a political solution to the conflict and warned that all military actions must abide by international laws.

WHO highlights youth suicide rates on World Mental Health Day
Death by suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15 and 29 and claims the lives of 800,000 people every year, the World Health Organization said as the United Nations marked World Mental Health Day this week. Suicide is also common in communities prone to discrimination, including refugees, migrants, indigenous peoples, members of LGBTQ groups and prisoners, the WHO says.

WHO reports progress in DR Congo fight against Ebola
Efforts to contain an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo are making progress and the virus has been largely contained in a small rural area, says Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization Health Emergencies Program. "The virus is now back to where it began in Mandima, the same rural zones where it transmitted at low intensity for several months before last August," Ryan says.

Report: How genetic improvement can enhance seafood
Genetic planning for seafood species can increase food production with minimal need for extra water, land, feed and other resources, according to a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations report. A reported 45% of cultured species are nearly the same as their wild counterparts.

UNSC reaffirms resolution on Cyprus no man's land
Members of the United Nations Security Council have reaffirmed resolutions that protect Varosha, an uninhabited part of the Cypriot city of Famagusta, from being resettled after authorities in Cyprus raised concerns that Turkey might seek to change the area's status. Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has voiced his satisfaction with the decision.
