ELTA North America brings cybersecurity center to Annapolis Junction HQ
ELTA North America plans to open a Cyber Innovation Center at its Annapolis Junction headquarters. ELTA, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries that designs and manufactures radar and other electronic systems, will expand its footprint from 7,500 square feet to 21,500 square feet and will add about 50 jobs.

Vixiar Medical in Annapolis lands $1.5M in seed money to launch first product
Annapolis-based Vixiar Medical has raised $1.5 million to support the launch of its first product, Indicor, a handheld monitor that estimates cardiac filling pressure. Vixiar's seed financing, which includes money from the Abell Foundation and Maryland Technology Development Corp., will also fund the regulatory certification process and final engineering for Indicor.

Technology firm unveils cybersecurity solution
Technology company Fluency released version 5.5 of its Security Analytics and Orchestration solution to offer health care organizations better network security protection against cyberattacks. The tool automates security event data through the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence, arranging and merging event information and removing duplicated data in real time.

Emergent BioSolutions expands biothreat countermeasures work in Baltimore
Emergent BioSolutions, a federal biotech contractor based in Gaithersburg, is growing both its drug portfolio to fight infectious diseases and business at its manufacturing facility in Baltimore. Emergent announced last week that it had acquired an anthrax drug from GlaxoSmithKline -- in a deal worth up to $96 million -- that will be made and packaged at its East Lombard Street and South Paca Street facilities beginning in 2020.

Engineers at the University of Maryland, College Park, have invented a bio-compatible, ionic current-generating battery that produces the same ion-based electrical energy used by living things. The battery also includes a unique feature: It stores its energy in grass.

Gaithersburg life sciences firm buys U. of Md. cancer treatment startup
Gaithersburg-based Lentigen Technology has purchased Living Pharma, a startup at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, for an undisclosed amount. Living Pharma is developing a cancer treatment that uses a patient's own T-cells to target tumors and can be customized to the patient.

US Army begins Md. cybersecurity research lab operations
The US Army Research Laboratory opened the Army Cyber-research Analytics Laboratory at an undisclosed Maryland facility last week, the Army announced Friday. The ACAL provides access to sensitive, live cybersecurity data to the US Department of Defense's industrial and federally funded partners.

Bill seeks to expand cyberworkforce
US lawmakers have introduced legislation aimed at bolstering the cyberworkforce. The New Collar Jobs Act would provide tax breaks for employers that invest in cybersecurity training, boost scholarship dollars for cybersecurity education and offer student-debt relief for individuals who take cybersecurity jobs in specific locations.
