NIST's draft cybersecurity practice guide focuses on medical device security
The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, in collaboration with the Technological Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota, has released a draft version of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Cybersecurity Practice Guide, Securing Wireless Infusion Pumps in Healthcare Delivery Organizations. The guide includes best practices for protecting against cyberthreats, managing assets and reducing vulnerabilities through a questionnaire-based risk assessment.

Comments on device test labs accreditation pilot program sought by FDA
The FDA has issued a request for comments on its planned Accreditation Scheme for Conformity Assessment Pilot Program, which aims to accredit medical device test laboratories for manufacturers' conformity to consensus standards recognized by the agency to support premarket review. The program comes as part of the agency's MDUFA IV agreement with the industry and is expected to pilot by the end of fiscal 2020.

FDA working on guidance for software, new digital health unit
The FDA is sorting through about 1,400 comments on draft guidance regarding software as a medical device and is trying to set standards for clinical validation of software. The agency is also working on setting up a new digital health unit within the Center for Devices and Radiological Health that will study artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, cloud computing, wireless medical devices, interoperability, telemedicine and cybersecurity.

The Health and Human Services Department's cybersecurity center should launch June 30, officials say. Roughly 98% of health sector organizations have little or no cybersecurity, and the center will help educate and protect them against breaches and attacks.

Growing need for bioanalytical services by clients results in second lab expansion in 2 years for MTC member -- Smithers Avanza
Smithers Avanza, a contract research organization supporting the pharmaceutical industry, announced that its Bioanalytical Services Division has completed the second expansion of its bioanalytical laboratory in the last two years. The expansion doubles the size of the Gaithersburg, Md., lab, which now offers 15,000 square feet of space, and continues the trend of growth in support of client demand for services.
