- Paragliders challenge mining company to save launch spot
Point of the Mountain in Utah is to paragliders, what Oshkosh is to general aviation: an ideal place -- due to topography and natural windflow -- to practice their sport, attracting gliders from around the world. Ten days ago, the Geneva Rock mining company began strip-mining the gravel off the mountain, already significantly changing its shape. A petition is being organized to stop the mining company. - Fantasy of Flight opens facility of treasures
Fantasy of Flight has opened the 20,000-square-foot Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Suitland, Md., to the public. Guests can visit the facility aboard an open-air trolley; among the aircraft on display are a Grumman Duck amphibian, a DeHavilland Vampire and a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. General Aviation News

- Beechcraft's loss of contract significant for company
While the Air Force's light air support contract, which was awarded to Embraer for the second time, is only worth $427 million for 20 planes, it was one of the last hopes to keep Beechcraft's AT-6 aircraft alive. The company emerged from bankruptcy set to focus on military work, but with U.S. military contract endorsement and defense budget cuts, Beechcraft may soon be out of the military aviation business. - Cessna is hiring global sales personnel
Cessna Aircraft is hiring some 30 sales personnel for positions in the U.S. and around the world in an effort to expand the company's global sales force by 50%. "The move is another example of how Cessna is investing in its future," Cessna President and CEO Scott Ernest said in a statement. - Chinese automotive group to develop GA aircraft
According to the chairman of Beijing Automotive Group, Xu Heyi, the company will take advantage of the expected opening of China's low-altitude airspace in May, beginning research and development of general aviation aircraft. - Pilot finds his calling as a flight instructor
Bill Coyner got his commercial pilot certificate in 1981 and wanted to fly 747s. To build up his hours in the air, he worked as a flight instructor and found out that he really enjoyed teaching and he's been an instructor ever since. "I'm having as much fun now as I did 20 years ago. The people who come to school here want to fly. They want to learn, they're happy to be in school," said Coyner. The News Tribune (Tacoma, Wash.)

Don't ban 121.5 MHz ELTs, AOPA says
The Federal Communication Commission's plan to prohibit the certification, manufacture, importation, sale or use of 121.5 MHz ELTs -- effectively forcing pilots to switch to 406 MHz ELTs -- would hinder, not improve, aviation safety and conflicts with existing laws, AOPA says. AOPA Online.
