Convenience store operator 7-Eleven has opened its second Dallas-area Evolution Store, a concept store designed to let shoppers test new innovations and products. The format, which has also been introduced in San Diego, New York and Washington, D.C., features expanded self-serve food and beverage options, touch screens for ordering, and mobile and contactless payment options.

Costco CFO: Fresh food has been a key to sales success

Costco has been thriving in the pandemic and Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti attributes the wholesaler's robust performance to five key factors, including its belief that e-commerce won't wholly define the future. Galanti also cited fresh food sales' importance to Costco's 2020 success, along with its membership program and large stores that help shoppers with social distancing and allow them to buy more on each trip.

Office furniture retailer Herman Miller is opening new stores in New York City and Los Angeles this month that will focus on work-from-home trends. The 1,500-square-foot stores will give shoppers a chance to try out the company's high-end ergonomic chairs before spending $500 or more to buy one online, Herman Miller Retail President Debbie Propst said.

Macy's could be required to temporarily close some stores around the country, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, CEO Jeff Gennette said. The retailer reported a 27% increase in online retail during the third quarter, while flagships in areas that typically bring in tourists and office workers such as the New York City Herald Square store have felt the pandemic's pinch.

More than half (59%) of consumers surveyed earlier this month said they had already begun their holiday shopping, and 42% reported starting earlier than usual this year, according to a survey from NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics. Black Friday remains an important marker for the holiday shopping season, but retailers are spreading out deals to accommodate shoppers in the pandemic.

Sprouts' growth will endure after pandemic, CEO says

Focusing on employee safety and seeking out its target customers have helped Sprouts Farmers Market weather the pandemic and will enable the grocer to continue the growth that saw the opening of 20 new stores so far this year. CEO Jack Sinclair said the strategy is helping to set Sprouts apart from other food retailers and cited future plans to open smaller stores that are closer to its distribution centers.
