Walmart offers 24/7 delivery in Fla. using Smart Boxes
Walmart's expansion of its InHome delivery service is getting a special kickoff in Florida, where the retailer is rolling out 24/7 delivery options for InHome members using HomeValet's Smart Box and app. The boxes are temperature-controlled, secure and can be managed and monitored by customers using the Home Valet mobile app and subscription service, and Walmart says the service will launch in other locations later this year.

Big Lots outlines plans to add 500 stores

Discount retailer Big Lots is shifting back into growth mode after 10 years of holding steady, with plans to open about 50 new locations this year as part of a multiyear expansion program. The chain aims to grow by about 80 new stores each year starting in 2023, with the ultimate goal of adding more than 500 locations.

NRF 2022: Retail's Big Show will return to the Javits Center in New York City on Sunday after shifting to a virtual event last year in response to the pandemic. Ahead of the event, NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay talked about the optimistic growth prospects for retail this year as supply chain challenges ease, and the concerns that are top-of-mind for merchants including inflation and taxes.

Kroger upgrades autonomous delivery vehicles in Texas
In an expansion of its three-year-old unmanned delivery pilot project in Houston, Kroger and the robotics and artificial intelligence company Nuro will roll out the third generation of an autonomous, all-electric vehicle. The newest incarnation of Nuro has double the carrying capacity, customized storage options, temperature controls and enhanced safety features.

Retail real estate in the Dallas-Fort Worth market proved resilient last year after the pandemic-related downturns of 2020, and growth is expected to continue this year, experts said. Landlords leased 3.9 million square feet of space in 2021, marking the third-strongest leasing market in more than two decades, and occupancy rates are on track to grow from 93.5% last year to 95%.

    NRF's 112th annual convention is on track to convene 15,000 attendees including exhibitors and speakers. "NRF continues working with local, state and federal health officials to ensure that we not only meet but greatly exceed safety guidelines and COVID-19 protocols at NRF 2022: Retail's Big Show at the Javits Center in New York City, Jan. 16-18," said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. The Javits Center has installed state-of-the-art sanitation and filtration systems, and the newly renovated North Hall allows more square footage to accommodate attendees. Read more.

    Casual dining chain Chuy's will increase prices by 3% or more with the launch of a new menu next month to offset higher food and labor costs, CEO Steve Hislop said at a conference. The company typically evaluates prices every year, but the current unusual conditions could lead the chain to raise menu prices a second time later this year, Hislop said.
