Production of ready-mixed concrete in Texas outpaced California in 2020, at 61.8 million yards compared with 37.8 million, said 2021 National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Chairman Abbott Lawrence at the 67th annual Texas Aggregates & Concrete Association meeting earlier this month. Jon Hockenyos of TXP said "low interest rates, pent-up demand for travel and social experiences, and a lot of stimulus money being pumped into the economy" will contribute to the pace of recovery from the pandemic.

ACI shares its sadness at the loss of life following the collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida, USA, on June 24, 2021. A team consisting of ACI member experts is being assembled to work with the National Institute of Standards and Technology on the investigation into the collapse.

Concrete Innovation
CarbonBuilt and the National Carbon Capture Center have finished a multi-week test of carbon utilization and concrete production technology at a facility in Wilsonville, Ala. The technology successfully injected carbon dioxide from the flue gas streams of natural gas- and coal-fired generating units directly into more than 5,000 concrete blocks.

The Kadenwood residence at the Whistler Mountain ski resort in British Columbia was built with concrete roof cantilevers to help manage heavy amounts of snow. The home's designers used four kinds of structural thermal breaks to prevent thermal bridging and to insulate the concrete.

Researchers in Russia have found steel, basalt and polypropylene fibers can significantly boost concrete's resistance against external loads. For instance, steel-and-basalt-fiber-reinforced concrete was 35% more resistant to compression while tensile strength rose by 79%.
