Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that, if approved by the federal government, would give state residents legal access to prescription drugs sold in Canada and other countries, which are to be determined. DeSantis expects HHS to approve the program.

FDA committees discuss possible restrictions for high-dose opioids
The FDA's Anesthetic and Analgesia Drug Products Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee started a two-day meeting to seek input from patients and health care experts on the clinical value and potential risks of higher opioid doses. The agency will use the feedback to determine whether higher opioid doses should be restricted or pulled from the market.

USPSTF recommends PrEP for those at risk of HIV
The US Preventive Services Task Force recommended that pre-exposure prophylaxis medication be offered to healthy patients at high risk for HIV infections, particularly those with HIV-positive partners, people who inject illegal drugs and those who have unprotected sex with at-risk people. The guidelines, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, also reiterated the recommendation of HIV screenings for all individuals ages 15 to 65 and all pregnant women.

Report finds record-high mortality from suicide, alcohol, drugs
A Commonwealth Fund report found combined nationwide mortality from suicide, drug overdoses and alcohol reached record levels in 2017, but parts of the country were affected more heavily than others. The report, which used 47 measures to rank states, also looked at population health more broadly and found that health care coverage was a key differentiator between high- and low-ranking states.
