Expanding exports requires more language skills for U.S. companies
U.S. firms are looking overseas to expand their businesses with exports. Companies in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in Minnesota, for example, hope to double exports over the next five years. To accomplish that, companies need to hire more workers who speak the languages of growing markets, such as China and Brazil. Recruiting is difficult as employers seek workers with language abilities as well as the specialized skills or knowledge needed for their industries.
