Study: ERs should hire interpreters to reduce treatment errors
A study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine discovered that errors in emergency rooms were about double when the facilities lacked a trained interpreter to interact with non-English-speaking patients. Hospitals that receive federal money are required to provide translation services, but the study indicates that work is done best by a professional interpreter, as opposed to a family member of the patient or a member of the hospital staff without medical training.
