Indonesia halts U.S. beef imports after BSE discovery in Calif.
The detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in a California dairy cow prompted the Indonesian government to suspend importation of U.S. beef. Indonesian Vice Agriculture Minister Rusman Heriawan said the ban takes effect today "and will last until the U.S. can assure us that its beef industry is free" of the disease. Indonesia will offset a possible shortage by bringing in more beef from New Zealand, Canada and Australia.
