Report: Healthier lifestyles are needed to lower disease rates
The rates of cancer and other chronic diseases could be lowered through healthier diets, exercise, weight loss, preventive screenings and reducing tobacco use, according to the American Cancer Society's annual "Cancer Prevention & Early Detection Facts & Figures" report. The report says an estimated 577,000 people will die from cancer this year, with one-third of the cases caused by obesity, poor nutrition and a lack of exercise. The authors called for more collaboration among government, private industry, nonprofits and health care providers to reduce disease risks.
