GAO finds the IRS lagging in its correspondence audit processes
The Internal Revenue Service needs to improve its communication in correspondence audits, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office. The GAO found that the agency's response to taxpayers was lagging in more than half of correspondence sent to the agency. Also, taxpayers were provided misleading time frames for when they would hear back from the IRS.
