Federal rail policy failing American consumers and manufacturers, according to new report card
The American Chemistry Council released a new rail report card that provides further evidence that Congress needs to reform U.S. freight rail transportation policy to better serve consumers and businesses. Citing policies that were supposed to promote the economic health of rail carriers and ensure access to competitive freight rail service for shippers, the report card highlights how the U.S. is failing to achieve most of the goals established by Congress in the Staggers Rail Act more than 30 years ago. "Current U.S. freight rail policy has fallen far short of its goal of promoting a competitive system, which has had a serious impact on U.S. manufacturers and consumers," said Mike Walls, ACC's Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Affairs. "Congress needs to finish the job and take meaningful action to ensure our nation's freight rail system fully operates in a free market." Read more.
